The coastal town of Rafina is renowned for its bustling ferry port, thriving seafood culture, and beautiful beaches. However, few are aware of the secret historical sites, spanning from Neolithic times to World War II, and even fewer recognize the environmental significance of this coastal region.
Geopedia offers day tours that explore the unique natural and historical sites of Rafina. Join us for a walk on a hill covered by a pine forest, where we will visit the German Fortress from World War II. At Marikes Beach, we will discuss the creation and evolution of a sensitive ecosystem, which includes the last sand dunes of Attica, the geological formations of Marikes Beach, and the rich diversity of coastal and marine flora. Additionally, we'll enjoy a panoramic view from an acropolis built in 3000 B.C., among the Mediterranean coastal flora.

Tour Description
1st Route: The German Fortress from WW2
Ochiro Hill, situated next to the riverbed of Rafina and offering views overlooking the harbor and Pendeli Mountain, is covered by a pine forest. During the German occupation, the local population was compelled to forced labor, including digging trenches, constructing embrasures, rifle ranges, ammunition storehouses, and bunkers. As we stroll through the pine-covered hill, we will immerse ourselves in the experience of an open-air 'museum,' observing the fortifications and listening to their stories.

2nd Route: Askitario acropolis
"The 'Askitario' is a Bronze Age acropolis dating back to 3000 B.C., situated atop the triangular-shaped hill of Crocodile. One side of the hill features a rugged, rocky coastline, while the other side offers access to the expansive sandy beach of Marikes. The panoramic view from this elevated vantage point is breathtaking, encompassing Marathon Bay, the rolling hills of Porto Rafti, Makronissos, and the distant island of Euboea, crowned by the imposing peak of Mount Ochi. Amidst the fragrant aroma of herbs, we'll immerse ourselves in the vista, contemplating the enduring human presence from ancient times to the present day."

3nd Route: Marikes beach
The beach of 'Marikes' is a rare ecosystem in the Attica Region, renowned for its high ecological value. As we walk along the 700-meter beach, we'll discover the protected seagrass Posidonia oceanica and unravel the local mystery of the 'German concrete' scattered around the beach. Additionally, we'll explore the sand dunes and delve into their unique flora.
